About Atlas: Write and Collect

Atlas is a creative workspace for writing, world-building, and turning ideas into finished creative pieces. It isn’t a simple note-taking tool—it’s an integrated workspace for gathering research, organizing ideas, and shaping writing into polished works ready for export and publishing. Built natively for Mac, iPad, and iPhone, Atlas uses Markdown as its writing format and pairs it with freeform canvases, deeply customizable export options, and iCloud syncing with thoughtful conflict resolution across every device. Creative projects generate far more than just prose. A novel has chapters alongside character sheets, location descriptions, and plot maps. A thesis has drafts alongside annotated PDFs and concept diagrams. Atlas keeps all of these materials together in a single project. Text documents, folders, canvases, sketches, images, PDFs, audio, video, and saved web pages all coexist as first-class citizens—no more scattering work across half a dozen apps. Atlas’s editor formats Markdown live as you type—headings, bold, italic, highlights, blockquotes, lists, code blocks, and more all appear styled in real time without toggling between editing and preview modes. Beyond standard Markdown, Atlas adds annotations for attaching commentary to passages, footnotes for numbered references, and inline image embedding with drag-and-drop, resizable handles, and multiple source options. Every document carries a synopsis and notes field, keeping metadata separate from your writing. Use Wiki-Links to search your project and link to any document. These wiki-style links update automatically when you rename things, and the Inspector tracks backlinks so you can discover connections you didn’t plan—turning your workspace into a personal knowledge graph. Some ideas need spatial arrangement rather than linear sequence. Atlas canvases are infinite workspaces where you pin document cards, text labels, images, web pages, sketches, and lightweight pin markers. Draw edges between cards to map relationships—plot threads, character connections, conceptual dependencies—and edit documents directly on the canvas. Canvases use the open JSON Canvas format for interoperability with other tools. Atlas gives you building blocks, not a prescribed workflow. Any document type can contain children—not just folders—so a chapter can hold its own research notes. The only fixed locations are Inbox and Trash; everything else is yours to name, move, nest, or remove. Seven built-in editor themes ship with Atlas, and a full Theme Editor lets you customize fonts, colors, and styling independently for every Markdown element, with separate light and dark palettes that sync across devices. When your work is ready, export to Markdown, plain text, HTML, ePub 3, RTF, or PDF. ePub supports cover images, chapter splitting, and footnote placement options. Folder exports produce separate files or a single continuous document. Internal links resolve to readable text automatically, and an export preview lets you verify everything before finalizing. iCloud sync keeps everything—projects, documents, tags, templates, canvases, and version history—synchronized across all your devices. When the same document is edited on multiple devices, Atlas detects conflicts, shows where each edit originated, and offers resolution options. A safety snapshot is created automatically before any resolution. Version history tracks every save so you can star, annotate, or restore any previous version. The Mac version is built with AppKit. iPad and iPhone are built with UIKit and SwiftUI. These are separate, purpose-built implementations so each platform feels native: keyboard shortcuts and menu bar on Mac, touch and split views on iPad, compact navigation on iPhone. Atlas is available with a 30-day free trial including every feature. After the trial, a single subscription tier keeps everything unlocked—no gated features. If your subscription ends, Atlas enters read-only mode: you can still browse, read, and export your work. Your data is Markdown files and open formats, synced through your own iCloud account. Atlas never holds your writing hostage.

A creative workspace that combines collecting and writing with publishing is a nice all-in-one for writers. Not having to move between gather, write, and publish tools removes a lot of friction.
