The Overnight Edge: Why Almost All Stock Market Gains Happen While You Sleep Over 30+ years the S&P 500 has gained nearly 2,000% overnight while intraday returns sit at just 12% total. Here's the structural reason — and how to position for it. The Numbers That Should Change How You Trade Over the past 30+ years, the S&P 500 has increased roughly 20-fold on a buy-and-hold basis. Break that return into two buckets — gains made from open to close (intraday) vs. gains made from close to the next day's open (overnight) — and what you find is striking. Intraday returns over that 30-year span are barely positive, up only about 12% in total. The overnight strategy, by contrast, tracks almost identically to the full buy-and-hold return — up close to 20-fold. Let that sink in. Thirty years of intraday trading: +12%. Thirty years of just holding overnight: nearly +2,000%.

As you may already know, the Win Rate for StockKit's alerts is over 87% and the higher Rockkit Rated stocks are as high as 94.5%. Even so, it reflects the alerts as a total and an individual trader's experience is different. One of the main concerns is regime change, especially for negative trending stocks. A trader who opens a trade or multiple trades will have a bad experience with our alerts so we sought to overcome this. It started with back testing over 100 scenarios to determine a way to algorithmically solve this problem. The results: all regime change mitigation strategies, VIX-based volatility adjustments, algorithmic based position sizing, and automated circuit breakers do in fact work to decrease loss, but also affect winning trades to where the result is worse than without those measures in place. Extensive back testing showed that the Stockkit stock picks and strategies were more effective raw and with no loss mitigation strategies. What worked? Since we store historic candle data, we can detect chart patterns such as the bearish double top or the bullish cup and handle by checking recent history. The system then build a chart and shows precisely where within the pattern, the alert is fired. This adds more context to the alert and can signal bullish or bearish sentiment. An example has been added to our product screen shot above, but here's the text: A PATTERN ALERT FROG formed a double top with peaks at $70.43 (Dec 10) and $69.97 (Dec 15) — a 0.66% divergence confirming buyer exhaustion. Neckline at $63.27 broke Dec 17 with elevated volume. Alert fired Dec 31 at $60.00 — already $3.27 below neckline and in confirmed downtrend. Measured move target: $56.11. Earnings Feb 12 adds additional binary risk. Bearish - falling knife risk.
